Here, the girl discovered magic
An Inktober 2020 project
Here, the girl discovered magic zine cover 2020
Inktober is an art challenge that takes place annually on Instagram and other social media platforms during the month of October. This year, Maen Illustrates participated in the odd number prompts of Halftober - an Inktober prompt list created by @ellievsbear and @cocoglez__. Every second day, Maen created an ink painting using a limited colour palette and tools. In the end, she created sixteen full colour illustrations – along with a cover illustration with the intention of compiling the illustrations into a zine.
Along with illustrations, Maen also created eight Instagram Reels showing her process. One of the reels, for her illustration Rain, was featured by Instagram which helped the video to gain 1.1 million views and 36.6K likes.
Once Inktober had finished, she scanned the illustrations and made lighting adjustments in Photoshop. From here, she designed the 24 page zine using InDesign and Procreate to showcase her work from the challenge. The file was then sent to Jukebox Print in Vancouver, BC, Canada, for final printing.
The zine contains all 16 illustrations, previously unseen thumbnail sketches, information on her tools, and more. She titled it "Here, the girl discovered magic" as the illustrations tell a story of a girl and her cat familiar on a journey to discover magic.
The zine, along with some limited edition art prints, can be purchased on her website at maenillustrates.com.
